Saturday, 7:14 AM. Trailer 3 Is Moving.
Infographic: Saturday, 7:14 AM, trailer 3 is moving. 11,574 equipment thefts were reported in 2016 and only 21 percent of stolen equipment was recovered, according to the NER and NICB 2016 Equipment Theft Report.

Saturday, 7:14 AM. The coffee is still brewing when the phone buzzes on the counter.

Trailer 3 is moving.

Nobody is scheduled this weekend. Trailer 3 should be sitting in the back corner of the yard with the big mower on it. Instead, the map shows it on the county road, two miles from the yard and heading for the highway.

This is a scenario, not a customer story. But every part of it is how the same theft plays out when the owner finds out Saturday morning instead of Monday morning, and the national data says that timing is the difference that matters most.

The Monday Version

Here is how it usually goes. The trailer leaves Friday night or Saturday morning. Nobody is at the yard until Monday. The first crew in finds an empty spot and a cut chain, and the owner starts making calls around 6:30 AM, more than two days after the trailer left.

By then the trailer can be a long way off, the mower can be off the trailer, and the police are working from a description and whatever serial numbers you can find.

The results of that version are well documented. Of 11,574 equipment thefts reported to the National Crime Information Center in 2016, police recorded 2,442 recoveries, a recovery rate of about 21% (NER/NICB 2016 Equipment Theft Report).

Why Most Stolen Equipment Stays Gone

The report lists the factors behind the low recovery rate. The first one on the list is "delays in discovery of thefts and subsequent delays between time of the occurrence and reporting." Another is "equipment owners' inaccurate or nonexistent ownership records."

Its advice is to give law enforcement accurate equipment information "as soon as they discover a theft," so police can identify it "even during weekends or at night" (NER/NICB 2016 Equipment Theft Report).

Notice the phrase: as soon as they discover it. The clock that matters does not start when the trailer is stolen. It starts when you find out.

The Saturday Version

Back to the kitchen. Here is what the next hour looks like when the alert comes first:

7:14 AM. After-hours movement alert. The owner opens the app and sees the trailer moving on a live map.

7:16 AM. 911. "My trailer was just stolen from my yard and I can see where it is right now." The owner gives the road, the direction, and a description of the trailer and the mower.

7:20 AM. The owner texts the responding officer a shareable tracking link, so the officer can see the location update without anyone relaying it over the phone.

7:25 AM. The owner pulls up the serial number list and the photo of the trailer VIN from the shared folder, ready for the report.

7:40 AM. The trailer stops at a pull-off. The location keeps updating every 2 minutes, and officers have an address instead of a description.

Nobody can promise how that ends. But it starts with a fresh location and a live call, not a cold report on Monday.

What to Do If It Happens to You

1. Do not chase it. Call 911, not the thief. Let the police make the stop.

2. Give the dispatcher what you can see. Road, direction, and a description of the trailer and what is on it.

3. Share the location. A live link the officer can open is better than reading coordinates over the phone.

4. Have your records ready. Serial numbers, the trailer VIN, and photos, somewhere other than the truck.

5. Call your insurer after the police. The police report comes first. Your insurer will need it.

Where Alertrax Fits

Everything in the Saturday version depends on one thing: finding out first. That is what Alertrax does.

  • After-Hours Movement Alerts: Set the hours a trailer should be parked. If it moves outside them, your phone tells you, on a Saturday, at night, or on a holiday weekend.
  • Geofence Alerts: Draw a boundary around the yard and get notified when a tracked trailer leaves it.
  • Live Fleet Map: Location updates every 2 minutes in the Alertrax Fleet Portal and the iOS and Android app.
  • Shareable Tracking Link: Generate a live link and send it to the responding officer, with no login required.
  • Complete Route History: The full trail from the yard to wherever the trailer stopped.
  • One-Year Battery, No Wiring Required: Two AA cells and nothing to wire, so it works on a trailer with no power of its own.
  • 100% Waterproof, Covert Magnetic Mounting: Mounted where it is not the first thing a thief checks.
